Abstract
The purpose of this study is to review literature on visual perceptual intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), analyze intervention trends and effectiveness, and propose future research directions.
For data collection, we selected and screened for the first and second stages based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the literature on visual perceptual intervention for children with ASD published between 2018 and 2023 in DBPIA, RISS, KMBASE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases, resulting in the selection of five studies.
Among the five selected studies, two (40%) employed a single-subject design (SSD), and there were no randomized controlled trials (RCTs). On average, 7.8 participants were involved in the studies, primarily targeting boys with ASD aged 4-9 years. COMCOG, GVMIL, perceptual-motor program, TEACCH, and Vision Therapy were used as intervention methods. The intervention period, sessions, and time averaged 11.25 weeks, 22.4 sessions, and 46.67 minutes per session, respectively. Assessment tools for visual perception skills included K-DTVP-2, DTVP-3, MVPT-3, visual perception skills tests, oculomotor assessments, and visual-spatial skills assessments. Additional assessment tools included the WeeFIM and researcher/parent observations.
In this study, visual perceptual interventions for children with ASD were found to have a positive impact not only on the visual perception skills, but also on activities of daily living and social skills. However, research on visual perceptual intervention for children with ASD, both domestically and internationally, is currently inadequate. Therefore, a more active research on visual perceptual intervention for children with ASD is necessary.
